Since 2015, the now-famous remarks made by former Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch have dominated national discourse. The quote’s original meaning has long been forgotten, despite its legendary status.
Lynch was facing what some could consider “excessive” sanctions from the NFL at the time. Lynch reached a breaking point during his Super Bowl news conference and concluded that his best option was to just default on every response. Ironically, there was a fine for that as well.
In addition to using fines as a weapon against players, the NFL has made it a point to discourage play styles that it does not want to support. This works occasionally, but other times it irritates players and fans alike.
Maxx Crosby talks about Deshaun Wtason
Maxx Crosby, a pass rusher for the Las Vegas Raiders, cited his altercation with Deshaun Watson as an example to explain how the sanctions process operates.
“My rookie year, I got fined $50,000 in one game. I was a rookie… It was a back-to-back offense on a roughing. I put my nose through Deshaun Watson’s chin and speared him. I murdered Deshaun Watson.”
Crosby continued by pointing out how harmful some of these fines can be to a player’s financial status, particularly in the early stages of a career, even though other people might find the situation humorous. Crosby acknowledged that the fines unavoidably compelled him to “…clean it up,” to the NFL’s credit.
