Matt Cassel Describes How a Wild Super Bowl Party Cost Him $20,000

The NFL’s biggest event is the Super Bowl. Every year, fans and commentators swarm to the host city for a major event. Naturally, it is also a unique occasion for the players. And while they’re in town, they make every effort to enjoy the occasion and liven it up. Matt Cassel‘s efforts backfired one year.

Cassel and co-host Bobby Jones told the story on their podcast, Lots to Say. The third-year pro went to a team dinner with the majority of his top teammates before to Super Bowl XLII. And regrettably, he was left with a big bill.

“We went to a Super Bowl party with a bunch of the group… we play the credit card roulette. We have 20 guys there. All the offensive linemen, a lot of the defensive players, our whole group… [Tom] Brady’s there. [Randy] Moss’s there. Every offensive lineman… this one meal, with all the starters. Boom: I get picked… so there goes my playoff bonus… it was like 20 grand.”

During that season, Cassel’s pay was $435,000. To the average person, that would be a significant sum, but by NFL standards, it is insignificant. Brady, by contrast, was earning $12.5 million.

Cassel was perhaps the lowest-paid player at the tournament, having been selected in the seventh round in 2005. But his unfortunate draw wasn’t quite as bad as what happened to him that Super Bowl week.
