Liam Coen Reveals the Jaguars’ Reason for Acquiring Travis Hunter

The Jacksonville Jaguars made news in one of the most unexpected trades of the 2025 NFL Draft when they selected two-way sensation Travis Hunter with the second overall choice. But how did they accomplish this? The secrets are revealed by their head coach.

Following the Chicago Bears’ pick of quarterback Cam Ward at No. 1, there were many forecasts that Hunter would wind up in Cleveland. However, Jacksonville made the game-changing decision, defying league expectations.

Liam Coen recently disclosed how they meticulously planned the deal with the Cleveland Browns and how the strategic move was executed without any public leaks.

Speaking to The Pat McAfee Show, Coen stated: “It was pretty consistent throughout that we wanted to keep quiet,” “Both organizations did a good job at keeping it professional, doing it the right way, and it all worked out for the best.”

Nearly a month before the selection, the Jaguars’ front staff, under the direction of general manager James Gladstone, had started talking about obtaining Hunter, and Coen acknowledged that the drive for Travis wasn’t his idea.

Coen clarified: “About a month prior to the draft, we started having conversations.” ” James [Gladstone] came into our office, and he said, ‘Hey, what would you guys think if we could go and make this thing happen?’

“When you go through the evaluation process of Travis on both sides of the ball, you say, ‘Yeah, I would take him as a DB and as a receiver.'”

Hunter’s exceptional ability to play on both sides of the ball is what makes him such a fascinating addition to the Jaguars. Hunter’s contributions as a wide receiver are well known, but he also excelled as a defensive back in college.
