The NBA community was taken aback by the Los Angeles Lakers’ historic transaction that sent Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in return for Luka Doncic. Team owner Jeanie Buss has now clarified the rationale for the transfer, pointing to Davis’ discontent with his position as well as his on-court difficulties.
Buss cited the Lakers’ numerous postseason setbacks against the Denver Nuggets, who had already swept Los Angeles in the 2023 Western Conference Finals and defeated them 4-1 in the 2024 playoffs’ first round. The Nuggets had already eliminated Los Angeles in consecutive postseasons.
Jeanie Buss talks about Anthony Davis’s trade
On NPR’s “Morning Edition,” Buss stated: “We have lost the last [two] years in a row to the Denver Nuggets in the playoffs, and we really didn’t have anything that was going to look different going into the playoffs again,”
“Anthony Davis was complaining about where he was being played and he wasn’t happy,” “So I think this was a positive for both teams. They got what they were looking for; we got what we were looking for.”
Another important element was Davis’ dissatisfaction with his position.
The Lakers have prospered after the move. They are currently on a seven-game winning run and have won 17 of their previous 20 games, good for second place in the Western Conference at 39-21. Los Angeles is 7-2 with Doncic in the lineup, solidifying their position as a serious contender for the championship.
But Dallas has had trouble. Due to injuries plaguing the roster, Davis has been declared out indefinitely.
