Ignoring the NCAA Transfer Portal, Xavier Lucas Commits to a New Program

It is technically possible for a college football player to leave a program without using the transfer portal, despite the fact that this is unconventional.

Former Wisconsin safety Xavier Lucas did just that. Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reported that he committed to the Miami Hurricanes after leaving the Badgers.

After Wisconsin refused to let Lucas use the transfer portal, Lucas filed a lawsuit against the university. After being notified, universities have 48 hours to add players’ names into the portal, according to the NCAA.

Lucas never entered the portal in a formal sense because Wisconsin never did. Xavier Lucas’ actions are allowed because there is no NCAA regulation prohibiting players from leaving schools without using the portal.

Xavier Lucas is one of 5 to exit the program

Lucas used to be a four-star safety in the class of 2024. According to the On3 Industry Rankings, he was ranked as the 26th safest. He attracted interest from Rutgers, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Miami.

Lucas participated in every one of Wisconsin’s 12 games this season. The Badgers missed a bowl game this season after finishing with a 5-7 record under head coach Luke Fickell.

As a true freshman, the young defensive back earned 18 total tackles, two TFLs, and one interception. The Badgers have experienced some roster upheaval, even if Lucas was not officially one of the transfers out of Wisconsin.

Amare Snowden, Jonas Duclona, Max Lofy, Kamo’i Latu, and Lucas are the five players who have left the program.
