The original film, which chronicled the reunion of a group of longtime friends, proved to be a seismic success for Universal Pictures upon its release in the summer of 2017.
Anchored by Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, and Tiffany Haddish, the Malcolm D. Lee-directed film grossed a whopping $140 million on a budget of $16 million.
In the time since, attention has turned to a sequel – which has been teased in earnest.
Now, one of its key writers Tracy Oliver has shared a “definitive ‘Girls Trip 2’ update. “
Currently, on the promotional trail for season 2 of Prime Video’s ‘Harlem’ (which she also helmed), Oliver said of the movie’s next installment: “it’s officially happening. I can say that.”
During her interview with Variety, she confirmed that all of the original cast are onboard and added that the film’s producer Will Packer “might kill me, we’re looking to set it in Ghana.”
There’s no word yet on a release date, as Oliver stressed that the final script has to be submitted first.
Nonetheless, the wheels are officially in motion.
