One of Doc Rivers’ most scathing online detractors at the moment is Gilbert Arenas. When talking about the senior coach’s struggles in the league, the former NBA great frequently crosses the line, which has led some to question whether there is a deeper cause.
Arenas disclosed on Gil’s Arena that he was resentful and vindictive of the Milwaukee Bucks head coach after Rivers passed him up for the 2006 NBA All-Star game. With passion, the 42-year-old said that he would never forgive the snub. “Yes, he can retire like the others,” the three-time All-Star continued.
Gilbert Arenas talks about bribing Doc Rivers with “Fruit basket”
With an average of 29.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.5 rebounds in 80 games during the 2005–06 season, Arenas had his finest scoring run of his career and was on track to be selected to the All-Star team for the second consecutive year. But it hurt Rivers that he didn’t earn his vote.
Arenas even attempted to use presents to bribe the seasoned coach: “Forgive? That I’m the third-leading scorer and I sent him a fruit basket. He’s talking edible raisins, I did my part, I used my credit card.”
The former NBA player is certain that he will always harbor resentment toward it.

He has questioned Rivers’ coaching appointments throughout the years on his show. He stated: “When you’re hiring a coach and you’re looking at their resume, the f**k you’re looking at?”
He described how Rivers has failed to win championships despite having some of the greatest players in history and members of the Hall of Famers on his teams. He only won one ring, and it was with a squad that included Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett.
Milwaukee’s dismal performance this year has further strengthened Arenas’ criticism of Rivers. However, the Rivers-Arenas story is not over.
