According to a Balch Springs Police Department spokesperson, a 54-year-old former Mesquite ISD coach groomed a teenager by “kissing on the forehead, hugging, (and) holding hands,” among other inappropriate behaviors.
After 20 years of teaching and coaching at A.C. New Middle School, Sergio Gonzalez was detained on Wednesday and accused of child grooming.
Gonzalez allegedly dated a 14-year-old girl, according to the police. According to Mesquite ISD, Gonzalez was placed on administrative leave after a social worker noticed the relationship in August. Later on, he quit.
As per the arrest document, Mesquite ISD discovered footage from A.C. New Middle School that purportedly showed Sergio Gonzalez “grabbing the victim’s buttocks and walking down the hallway holding hands before entering his classroom.” Additionally, he and the victim were seen on the school’s security footage showing up together in July with blankets, pillows, and what seemed to be an inflatable mattress.
Police give details on former Mesquite ISD Coach
The spokesperson for the Balch Springs Police Department, Officer Pedro Gonzalez, stated: “So, you can clearly see that they came into a room, and then the next morning, they came out wearing different clothes,” “He was sending them a text message saying, ‘my daughter and my granddaughter want to go to the movies,'” “That’s what makes it worse in this situation where this individual not only used his authority as a teacher but also his role as a father to manipulate the victim’s parents.” “It seems a little like Stockholm syndrome, where someone gets kidnapped and they think they’re not the victim. Same scenario. She does not believe she’s the victim. She truly believes that she’s in love with him,”
Police claim the former coach and instructor claimed another teacher the girl was his daughter and that he frequently used his paternal position to persuade the victim’s parents to allow her to stay at his residence overnight.
