The road to OSCAR glory was expected to be bit brighter for Fantasia and Danielle Brooks as the only two nominees at the 2024 Golden Globes for their respective performances in the 2023 ‘Color Purple’ musical.
Yet, the night ended with both singer-actresses going home empty handed.
As we reported, the 81st Golden Globe Awards (which aired live on January 7) saw Fannie compete against Jennifer Lawrence, Margot Robbie, Emma Stone, Natalie Portamn, and Alma Poysti for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
The GRAMMY winner lost to Stone in the category – a win that would’ve not only marked a career first for Fantasia but also a first for the award show overall as she would’ve been the first Black singer to own this category since its inception.
Angela Bassett made history in 1994 when she became the first Black woman to win the Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy Golden Globe for her portrayal of Queen of Rock Tina Turner in the critically acclaimed 1993 film ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It?’
At writing, she remains the only Black performer to have ever won in this category.
For Brooks, her portrayal of ‘Sofia’ in ‘Purple’ was on pace to make her only the 9th Black woman to win the Best Supporting Film Actress (Musical) Golden Globe behind previous winners Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis, Mo’Nique, Octavia Spencer, Ariana DeBose, Regina King, and Angela Bassett.
Battling Emily Blunt, Da’Vine Joy Rudolph, Jodie Foster, Julianne Moore, and Rosamund Pike for the honor, Rudolph not only emerged the victor at the award show’s 2024 ceremony but was presented the statuette by previous winner Bassett (alongside Jared Leto).

To add, the movie itself was not nominated for Best Picture (Musical).
