When asked about the NBA’s current situation, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green did not mince words, describing today’s game as “very boring” and lacking in strategic depth.
During All-Star Weekend, Green, a four-time NBA champion, was honest in his criticism of the league’s current emphasis on speed and three-point shooting over strategic play.
When asked if he thought the modern NBA was dull, Green responded, “Definitely.”
In a previous interview, the late Kobe Bryant referred to today’s game as “accidental basketball,” which the veteran forward cited. Green agreed with Bryant, saying that modern teams rely too much on fast breaks and three-point shooting instead of planned, calculated moves.
Draymond Green’s “Boring NBA” comment and his reasoning
During the interview, Bryant stated: “It’s all penetrate and pitch,” Bryant had said in the interview. “You may make the shot, you may not.”
“He couldn’t have been more right.”
Green feels that the caliber of play has decreased in spite of historic TV deals, higher player wages, and large crowds.
He cited a recent game against the Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James as an illustration of the kind of basketball he likes, in which each possession is a strategic move rather than a quick run to the three-point line. He further stated:
“Every possession is some type of chess move,” “You don’t get that today in the NBA, often. … You don’t just get that on a regular basis. It’s just who can run faster, who can hit more threes, it’s no substance. I think it’s very boring.”
The NBA is currently assessing how more three-point shooting will affect the game at the time of Green’s remarks.
