The actress is set to star in and produce the film adaptation of Ann Petry’s groundbreaking 1946 novel.

‘The Street’ tells the powerful story of Lutie Johnson, a determined young Black mother in 1940s Harlem, battling against the crushing forces of poverty and racism.

It was the first novel by a Black woman to sell over one million copies.

Deadwyler has described the book as “essential to American literature,” explaining how Petry’s words profoundly reshaped her understanding of motherhood and survival in America.

In a statement, she shared her hopes for the film adaptation:

“We hope to rumble the film landscape with an adaptation of her evergreen tale about the lengths to which one mother, one woman, is stretched for self, family, and the costs of survival.”

The adaptation is being developed by Deadwyler alongside producers Michael Sherman and Alix Madigan.

Currently, Deadwyler is captivating audiences in the Blumhouse horror film ‘The Woman in the Yard.’
