The world will have their eyes glued to TV screens on Thursday morning (January 23) as the 97th annual Academy Awards announces their highly anticipated list of nominees.
And while big films like ‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘Nickel Boys,’ ‘The Brutalist,’ ‘The Last Showgirl,’ and ‘Babygirl’ are expected to lead the charge for Best Picture, movie lovers are undoubtedly looking to see a similar response for the 2024 blockbuster ‘Wicked‘ starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
Among those expecting some serious recognition for the history-making musical is star Erivo herself who recently took to press to reveal she’s set to cause a commotion if her leading co-star doesn’t get her due.
Taking to Variety recently, Erivo dished on the Oscar buzz she’s received for her performance as “Elphaba” in the beloved Broadway musical-turned-film.
“I never really know how to respond when the question of awards comes up. It’s not my raison d’être,” she shared during the interview.
Already an EGOT nominee, Cynthia is only missing an Oscar from her awards collection having already been bestowed a TONY, GRAMMY, and EMMY for previous work.
And though she won’t crown herself as deserving of the Academy Award quite yet, someone she’s fully convinced should be walking away with the coveted trophy is co-star Ariana.
“I will raise hell if this lady does not get her [OSCAR] nomination,” Erivo said about Grande. “It’s a really f-cking hard job to jump into the middle of something like this and have it be your first time.”
Already a GRAMMY winner, Grande portrayed “Glinda” in the Jon M. Chu-directed and was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe at this year’s ceremony (which she lost to Zoe Saldana).
The Pop diva returned the praise to Erivo.
“You, Miss Elphaba, deserve your flowers, and I can’t wait to hold your train as you get that EGOT — and your gummy vitamins, and your thermos,” she said.
Fans of both singer-actresses will find out if they’ll be “raising hell” or not as the 2025 Academy Award nominations are set to be unveiled Thursday morning (January 23).
