Chris Del Conte, the athletic director for Texas, was not interested in rescheduling Saturday’s Ohio State vs. Texas game for Sunday.
Chip Brown, an insider with Horns247, said this week that Texas turned down Ohio State’s request to reschedule their 2025 season opener from August 30 to August 31. Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports was informed on Tuesday by Fox Sports executive Michael Mulvihill that Fox had authorized Ross Bjork’s proposal to reschedule the match before Texas rejected it.
In an interview with ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Del Conte had no trouble playing the villain, blaming the Longhorns for what seems set to be a noon game at Ohio Stadium.
Del Conte stated:
“Why would I want to move the game to Sunday night and have a short week for our boys who were just told we’re kicking off at high noon?”. “It was never about moving the time of day. It was just, ‘Hey do you want to move the day?’ And I go, ‘We’re not moving. We’re contractually obligated to this day.’ That was it, but you know, the craziness is oh my God, they said no. I just said no to Sunday. I’ve got to go to church. I mean, hot dang.”
If Ohio State vs. Texas had been rescheduled for Sunday, it would have faced the only other game in the broadcast window, Notre Dame vs. Miami, on ABC. The Buckeyes and Longhorns are playing each other home and home this year, and this year’s game is the first of that series. Additionally, the programs will convene in Austin on September 12, 2026. Given the SEC’s media agreement with ESPN, Saturday’s game is probably going to take place during prime time.
