Chris Carton Claims 3-Peat Won’t Alter Patrick Mahomes’ Legacy

The Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes are about to make history. Since that team strives to set records and do previously unheard-of achievements each year, it seems like firing that one up has become a January/February ritual.

It was the same with the 2024 campaign. Mahomes will try to pull off the first Super Bowl three-peat in league history, something that not even Tom Brady has done. But a lot of people think that even this three-peat won’t elevate Mahomes’ legacy to the point where he can overtake Brady just yet.

Chris Carton, an FS1 analyst, stated on the Breakfast Ball show that a three-peat won’t help Mahomes overtake Brady in the GOAT argument.

Chris Carton talks about the Patrick Mahomes-Tom Brady debate

He asserted that the number of Super Bowls won overall, rather than the number of straight victories, should be used to determine greatness.

Carton stated: “Nothing… It’s not gonna change a damn thing about how we think about him. It’s not gonna change his legacy, it’s not gonna change the narrative. Five Super Bowl appearances, if he loses, he’s 3-2 in Super Bowls. If he wins this, I get it three straight. Four of five, great, rarified air. If the Kansas City Chiefs lose this Super Bowl to the Eagles, does your opinion on Mahomes change one bit. No? So it means nothing,”

The three-peat would undoubtedly be a remarkable accomplishment and possibly one of the NFL’s most unbreakable records. Carton makes a valid point, though, when he says that a loss in Super Bowl 59 would not alter our perception of Mahomes. Why should a win count if a loss does not?
