As reiterated by her August 2022-released, history-making compilation album ‘Finally Enough Love,’ Queen of Pop Madonna is also Billboard’s Queen of Dance as she boasts a whopping 50 #1 hits on the ‘Dance Club Songs’ hitlist (more than any other artist on any chart ever).
But, like Aussie Pop Queen Kylie Minogue with ‘Padam Padam‘ before her recently, Madge’s dedicated fans would be royally surprised to know none of her classic dance numbers have ever topped Billboard’s Electronic Music chart – a tally separate from the Dance count.
That changed this week thanks to her ‘Vulgar‘ duet with fellow global Pop superstar Sam Smith.
After ample, yet cryptic teasing, the Ilya and Ryan Tedder-penned ‘Vulgar’ was unlocked for streaming and digital download on June 9 – just a week after Madonna dropped the record-setting ‘Popular’ with The Weeknd and Playboi Carti.
And while this week’s refreshed Hot 100 sees the thunderous bop absent (despite the excitement that accompanied its arrival), peruse of the Electronic Music chart shows a much better faring. In addition to being the third best-selling song of the week (among all genres), Billboard’s Electronic Music Sales hitlist sees ‘Vulgar’ printed at #1 – bumping Minogue’s Summer smash ‘Padam’ from the top spot in the process.
The crowning comes as a career-first for the Pop royal on any Electronic Music chart but a third reign for Smith on the Electronic sales listing (following 2014’s ‘Latch‘ with Disclosure and 2019’s cover of Donna Summer classic ‘I Feel Love‘).
Here are the numbers that powered the placement.
- Streaming: 1.8 million U.S.-based streams
- Sales: 3,000 downloads
- Radio Airplay: n/a
