Chart Check [Hot 100]: ‘Hold Me Closer’ is Britney Spears’ Longest-Charting Hit Since 2012’s ‘Scream & Shout’

Elton John and Britney Spears‘ latest hit, ‘Hold Me Closer,’ continues to hold onto the Billboard Hot 100 – months after making its historic premiere.

The first release of new music from Spears since the unveiling of her 2016 album, ‘Glory,’ ‘Hold’ – produced by Andrew Watt – danced onto the Hot 100 as a rework of Elton’s 1971 classic ‘Tiny Dancer.’

With its #6 debut on the coveted count, it not only gifted the GRAMMY-winning songstress the 14th top 10 hit of her career but also made her the youngest woman over 40 to place a song in the chart territory since the Hot 100’s inception in 1958.  Further, she joined an exclusive list of female hitmakers (Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Cher, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey) who can boast having top 10 hits over 4 distinctive decades.

This week, despite perennial domination from a rush of holiday music, the refreshed edition of the tally shows ‘Hold Me Closer’ at #67 in its 14th week of charting. Here are the numbers that supported its placement.

  • Streaming 4.2 million U.S.-based streams
  • Digital Downloads 1,500 sold
  • Radio Airplay 33.4 million audience impressions

The last time Spears stayed on the Hot 100 as long was with the Will.I.Am-led 2012 hit ‘Scream & Shout,’ which remained on the hitlist a whopping 24 weeks and peaked at #3 in February 2013.

At writing, ‘Scream’ is her third longest-running Hot 100 hit. Only ‘Baby One More Time’ (32 weeks), ‘S&M‘ with Rihanna (26 weeks), and ‘Till the World Ends’ with Nicki Minaj & Ke$ha (24 weeks) have enjoyed runs as long or longer.
