Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey is held accountable by Shaquille O’Neal for not calling up a player who could have made a difference.
The Cavaliers’ exceptional depth was what made them such a formidable club going into the postseason. Ty Jerome and De’Andre Hunter were players of starting caliber who came off the bench in addition to their starting lineup. Cleveland still lacked in one crucial area despite what appeared to be an overwhelming force of skill.
When it counted most, they were unable to score points. Donovan Mitchell was unable to carry the offensive load alone. Ironically, despite having a fantastic scorer on the team, the Cavaliers didn’t use him during the playoffs.
Emoni Bates, a 6-foot-10 forward who was previously compared to Kevin Durant as the next generation of great scorers, was a high school sensation. He hasn’t had the chance, thus he hasn’t lived up to those expectations. According to O’Neal, that is unacceptable.
Speaking on The Big Podcast, O’Neal inquired: “To the Cleveland Cavaliers’ general manager, what the f**k are you doing?”. “Why is Emoni Bates in the G-League?” “The last game you put him in, he had 7 threes. Don’t you think you need that for a championship?”
“If I’m a coach, I want all the scorers I can play,”. “He’s been in the G-League for two years. What’s going on?”
In the 2023 NBA Draft, Bates was chosen by Cleveland with the 49th pick. His skill set is now restricted to the Cavaliers’ G-League team, despite his enormous potential. He has been outstanding while playing with the Cleveland Charge.
Over his two seasons with the Charge, Bates is averaging 18.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. In the Cavaliers’ final regular-season game, he even displayed his NBA skills.
