Boston Red Sox Trolled by Donald Trump for Trading Mookie Betts to the Dodgers

The following spring, Mookie Betts chose not to visit the White House or President Donald Trump after winning a World Series ring with the Boston Red Sox in 2018.

After six years, Betts reversed his direction and shook hands with Trump on Monday, along with the other members of his Los Angeles Dodgers club. In the same time frame that Boston has struggled to maintain above.500, he was there to enjoy his second championship since being dealt to Los Angeles in 2020.

In addition to praising Betts and giving himself credit for identifying the flaw in the then-blockbuster move, Trump made fun of the trade.

During the Dodgers’ public celebration on Monday, Trump stated: “Mookie – that guy can play, can’t he?”. “I don’t want to say I watched him when he was on Boston, but I did. I didn’t think that was a particularly good trade when they made it and I happened to be right.”

During his tenure in Boston, Betts won the AL MVP award the year he won his first championship and was named an All-Star four times, a Gold Glove four times, and a Silver Slugger three times. The Red Sox then moved Betts and David Price to the Dodgers in exchange for outfielder Alex Verdugo, infielder Jeter Downs, and catcher Connor Wong when they were unable to sign him to a long-term agreement.
