Billboard: Mariah Carey’s ‘Type Dangerous’ Boasts Biggest R&B Radio Chart Debut Since Whitney Houston’s 1995 Hit ‘Exhale’

If being the week’s top-selling R&B song wasn’t enough to boast, Mariah Carey‘s comeback hit ‘Type Dangerous‘ performed even better during its inaugural print on the updated R&B radio charts at Billboard.

With its #95 opening on latest Hot 100, ‘Dangerous’ marked a personal milestone for Carey when it became her highest-charting debut this decade.

Here are the numbers that powered its placement:

  • Streaming = 2.5 million U.S.-based streams
  • Sales = 5,000 digital downloads
  • Radio airplay = 14.7 million audience impressions

Her 50th single to appear on the Hot 100 over her 35-year career, the Anderson. Paak-produced bop also landed at #1 on the R&B Song Sales hitlist and stormed the top 10 of the Hot R&B Songs and R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay hitlists – premiering at #7 on both radio charts.

The latter entry was particularly impressive as Billboard reported “the single scored the highest entrance for a song in nearly 30 years since Whitney Houston’s ‘Exhale (Shoop Shoop)’ started at No. 6 in November 1995.”

For context, Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop airplay chart ranks the top R&B and Hip-Hop songs based on audience impressions and spins from Urban radio stations in America.

The opening performance of Carey’s comeback cut is comprised of data collected before the tune’s Joseph Kahn-directed music video premiered.

Delivery of said visual has only amplified chatter around the song as well as excitement for its yet-titled parent album.

Keep it locked to That Grape Juice to see just how far upward the buzz helped move ‘Dangerous’ on next week’s Hot 100.
