Billboard 200: SZA’s ‘SOS’ Surpasses Mariah Carey to Join Whitney Houston’s 1985 Debut As the ONLY Albums By Black Women to Reign for 12+ Weeks

SZA has extended a lifeline to the already history-making Billboard 200 tenure of her chart-topping sophomore album ‘SOS‘ courtesy of its December-released deluxe edition ‘LANA.’

Just a week after helping the project vault back to #1 on the all-genre tally, Billboard has delivered news the GRAMMY-winning project has stayed put for another frame.

Taking to press Sunday (January 5), Billboard reported ‘SOS’ has fended off stiff competition from the likes of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘GNX,’ Taylor Swift‘s ‘Tortured Poets Department,’ and more to maintain claim of the Billboard 200’s top spot.

Coming as its overall 12th week in the position, SZA’s LP has now surpassed Mariah Carey‘s 1990 eponymous debut on the list of longest-reigning albums by Black female performers. ‘Mariah Carey‘ ruled the Billboard 200 for 11 weeks at the height of its popularity.

Among all studio albums by Black women, only Whitney Houston‘s 1985 debut has enjoyed longer tenancy in the Billboard 200’s top spot as it reigned for 14 weeks at the height of its popularity.

The news comes days after Carey surpassed SZA’s ‘Snooze‘ record for longest-charting hit by a Black woman in the Hot 100’s 66-year history!
