Rivalries in sports can get pretty intense, but this one seems to be reaching a whole new level. It’s like they’re playing a game of one-upmanship, and fans are eating it up.
On Tuesday, the Sky star reposted a TikTok video containing a screenshot of an X post mocking Clark as a “white gyal running away from the fade,” a reference to their brouhaha during Chicago’s season-opening loss to Clark’s Fever on Saturday.
The Indiana guard was hit with a flagrant foul for shoving Reese — who moments before had pushed the Fever’s Natasha Howard while positioning herself for a rebound.
The incident between the former collegiate rivals has stayed in the headlines as the WNBA investigates alleged racist comments directed toward Reese during the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
“The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms — they have no place in our league or in society,” the league said in a statement Sunday. “We are aware of the allegations and are looking into the matter.”
On Monday, Reese shared a TikTok video in which a user claimed that it could no longer be classified as a “rivalry” between Reese and Clark.
“The situation at hand is that when Angel Reese walks into the Indiana Fever arena, she is no longer safe. She is not safe, because there are some Indiana Fever fans who are racist, who will treat her like she is not a human being, who will hurl slurs and threats her way, and that is not OK. That’s not a thing that happens in sports – it is not OK,” the user said.
“You all knew that was going to happen. You all knew that environment is unsafe for Angel.”
Reese, the former LSU star, spoke out regarding the league’s handling of the incident to this point on Tuesday.
“There’s no place in the league for that. I think the WNBA and our team and our organization [have] done a great job of supporting me,” she told reporters. “Going through this whole process, it could happen to me, it could happen to anyone and I think they’ve done a great job supporting us in this.”
“They understand that this is the priority,” she added. “There’s no place for this. … Obviously, the women in this league, they know that and know there’s no space for that. I believe that every player in this league deserves to be treated with respect and want to come to work and have fun and have a great environment to work at.
Reese’s comments echoed those made by Clark a day earlier.
“There’s no place for that in our game, there’s no place for that in society,” she told reporters. “We want every person that comes into our arena, whether player, whether fan, to have a great experience. I appreciate the league doing that. I appreciate the Fever organization has been at the forefront of that since Day 1, and what they’re doing.
Whether you’re Team Angel or Team Caitlin, one thing’s for sure – this rivalry is definitely making waves in the world of basketball. Let’s see what happens next in this epic showdown.
