After a 4–13 Record, the Patriots Have Fired Jerod Mayo

The Athletic’s Chad Graff and RJ Kraft speculate that after firing Jerod Mayo on Sunday, the New England Patriots may choose to hire Mike Vrabel as their next head coach.

Following the Patriots’ 4-13 conclusion to the 2024 season, Mayo was fired on Sunday.

Hours after the Patriots’ victory against the Buffalo Bills in Week 18 cost them the right to the first selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, the announcement was made.

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reports that Alex Van Pelt, the offensive coordinator, has also been let go. After the poor season, general manager Eliot Wolf is “safe” despite the coaching staff changes, according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.

Is Mike Vrabel the obvious choice after Jerod Mayo for the Patriots?

The Patriots are now “expected to begin their search for a new head coach immediately,” Graff and Kraft said. According to Graff and Kraft, that search might turn up Vrabel, a former linebacker for the Patriots who coached the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2023.

Graff and Kraft pointed out that the NFL’s Rooney Rule, which mandates that teams interview minority candidates for available front office positions, would prevent the Patriots from hiring Vrabel right away.

According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, Vrabel is thought to have expressed interest “in recent weeks” in possibly joining the Patriots as head coach.

Assistant coaches “who would be prepared to go with him” if Vrabel were to move to Foxborough, Howe continued. The disgruntled home fans at Gillette Stadium demanded that Mayo be fired after the team finished the season on a six-game losing skid.

After leading the Patriots to an expensive victory against the Bills in Week 18, Mayo further infuriated Patriots supporters.

Since acquiring the Patriots in 1994, this is the first time the Krafts have sacked a head coach after just one season. Before Belichick’s 24-season tenure as head coach, Hall of Famer Bill Parcells and Pete Carroll both held the position for several years.

With Mayo, that trend shifted. Despite his prior expertise as the Patriots’ assistant coach, he was unable to maintain the defense’s competitiveness on a regular basis.
