One of the most bizarre cards in recent boxing history is about one month away. Three superstars are scheduled to engage in their own bouts on the same night in Times Square, New York City. Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney, and Ryan Garcia will all be competing on May 2 and have a lot to show.
Haney needs to bounce back after his devastating defeat to Garcia, while Lopez will be defending his WBO belt. It’s hard to avoid talking about Haney and Garcia’s prior fight, even though they won’t be facing off on this card and perhaps not in the future.
Oscar De La Hoya believes he understands what both boxers are thinking, and the media wants to know where their thoughts are.
Devin Haney is referred to as a “shot fighter” by Oscar De La Hoya following the bout with Ryan Garcia
Three of the Golden Boy Promotions CEO’s fighters are scheduled to compete: Garcia, Jose Ramirez (against Haney), and Arnold Barboza Jr. (against Lopez). One of De La Hoya’s remarks on Haney during his interview with BoxingScene truly caught our attention.
“Ramirez is coming in guns blazing. He senses the opportunity. I feel Devin Haney is a shot fighter after what Ryan Garcia did to him. It happens that quick, yes. I’ve seen his demeanor. He looks lost.”
It has been almost a year since Garcia was suspended, and Haney and his father are still fighting Garcia. Haney has said that after losing to Garcia, he went into a bad place. Even though the fight was declared a no-contest, Haney seems to be still dealing with the psychological and bodily effects of it. Ramirez might have a chance to pull off an upset because of that. On May 2, Haney has a lot to gain and a lot to lose.
