A$AP Rocky may have triumphed over the felony firearm assault case that could have landed him up to 24 years in prison, but – if his accuser A$AP Relli has his way – the star’s bank account won’t be able to boast the same evasion.
Just a week after Rocky (born Rakim Mayers) was found not guilty of firing a semiautomatic pistol at his former friend Relli (born Terell Ephron), the latter is doubling down on his plan to move forward with a civil lawsuit over the same incident.
Despite the unanimous jury verdict that acquitted Mayers on all charges relayed to the 2021 shooting that allegedly saw him assault Ephron during a dispute, Terell’s lawyer Melissa Mikail successfully motioned the court to grant a civil lawsuit trial.
“The standard in a criminal case is much higher than the preponderance of the evidence standard in a civil matter. We still believe that our claims have merit, and we intend on fully litigating them,” Mikail said during a court hearing in Los Angeles this week.
Mayers has maintained his innocence from the start, a sentiment now being echoed by his civil lawyer James Sargent.
“My position is there’s no longer a basis for them. Mr. Ephron testified in the criminal case as to the facts and circumstances. The jury’s acquittal speaks volumes as to how they valued that testimonial evidence,” Sargent said to Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge William Fahey.
Sargent did not represent Mayers in his criminal case, but did take to press to share his confidence in a repeat victory for his client.
“The allegations Mr. Ephron raises in this case stem from the same incident that a jury of 12 people rejected wholesale. Mr. Ephron testified there, and the jury, in the face of that testimony, returned a complete acquittal. So we look forward to a full vindication of Mr. Mayers in this matter,” he said.
While the payout sought with Ephron’s current lawsuit has not been revealed, the jurors from the criminal trial learned the allegedly injured rapper was looking for a $30 million settlement from Mayers to avoid a public lawsuit – leading many to believe this is an extortion attempt.
Nevertheless, the next hearing for the current civil case is set for late May 2025 with a subsequent trial marked for January 12, 2026.
