Woody Johnson, Blasts Claims That His Teenage Son Brick Has a Say on the Team

Owner Woody Johnson of the New York Jets maintains that his teenage son has no say in the team’s choices and called a recent report on the dysfunction of the team a “smear piece.”

Johnson told the New York Post that he read The Athletic’s story from last month, which claimed that the 77-year-old owner follows his teenage son Brick’s counsel.

In an article that was released on Monday, Johnson told the Post: “I think the article is a typical smear piece — unsubstantiated,”  “Nobody really stood up and put their name on anything. It’s absolutely untrue. Everything was out of context. When you’re losing games, it gives people the artistic license to kind of do what they want.”

What did The Athletic claim Woody Johnson’s son did for the Jets?

According to many sources cited by The Athletic, 18-year-old Brick Johnson plays a significant part in choices about the Jets’ staff and roster. The inclusion of Woody Johnson‘s younger son, Jack, in that procedure was also addressed in the study.

Last month, a source told Rich Cimini of ESPN that Johnson’s boys are “very much” involved in football-related issues. However, the Jets have refuted that, and Johnson told the Post that Brick “has no role in the organization.”

Last month, Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback for the Jets, made light of the teens’ alleged influence in an interview with “The Pat McAfee Show.” Rodgers made the following joke when discussing his future and the potential release by the Jets at the end of the season: “Being released would be a first; being released by a teenager, that would also be a first.”

Johnson admitted to the Post that he takes his sons to team meetings and shows them about the Jets facilities, likening it to “an apprenticeship.”
