Hailed as one of the greatest actresses of the 21st century, Viola Davis is no stranger to garnering critical acclaim for her groundbreaking roles on stage, film, and television over the last 35 years.
That acclaim has yielded the 57-year-old no shortage of industry accolades over the years as well, triumphs highlighted by her becoming the first Black actress to obtain the highly coveted Triple Crown of Acting (OSCAR, EMMY, and TONY in competitive categories).
Thanks to securing a GRAMMY nomination at the award show’s 2023 edition, however, Davis also stands a chance to make history by joining an exclusive club of EGOT winners.
Details inside.
As reported here, Davis is nominated at this year’s GRAMMYs for Best Audio Book for her memoir ‘Finding Me.’
Up against previous golden gramophone winners Questlove, Mel Brooks, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Jamie Foxx, if Viola captures the category it will not only mark her first GRAMMY win but also put her in another exclusive group: EGOT winners.
At writing, there only 22 artists in history who can boast having won an EMMY, GRAMMY, OSCAR, and TONY Award. Among them, only 6 are Black (Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Quincy Jones, James Earl Jones, Whoopi Goldberg, and Harry Belafonte).
Uniquely, a GRAMMY win would make Viola the first Black artist to become an EGOT strictly as a performer (not as producer or by honorary awards).
Keep it locked to That Grape Juice Sunday night (February 5) to find out if she will be penciling her name in history books.
