Victor Wembanyama’s Autographed Jersey Going Up for Auction Has Carmelo Anthony “Outraged”

In addition to being a basketball whiz on the court, San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama also seems like a really nice guy. While traveling to New York to play the Knicks and the Nets, he posted a tweet in late December inviting people to join him in playing chess in Central Park.

Hundreds of people showed up to play against and interact with the young legend, making it one of the most touching NBA stories of the year. Wemby participated in one of the most memorable jersey exchanges with a very young fan following the Nets game.

Carmelo Anthony talks about the Viral Victor Wembanyama movement

It must have been a magical moment. Wemby undoubtedly believed that. False; the jersey was already up for auction a few hours later.

On his 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast, Carmelo Anthony discussed how, regrettably, such incidents occur frequently and how people use children as props in order to profit financially from signing autographs from well-known sportsmen. He said:

“I’ve seen it where the dad or the guy come over, you probably don’t sign it, and he send the kid over. I was like, ‘Man, you got the same shirt that man had, where you get that hat from, he just had that?’ … That happens, I’ve seen it. You wind up signing the s*** anyway because you feel bad, like ah it’s a kid, you know what I mean. But you be wanting to curse the guy out, like, ‘Man don’t be sending no f****** kid over here. You ask. You get turned down, you get turned down.’”
