Tyrese Maxey has been a standout player for the Philadelphia 76ers, especially early in the NBA season. Despite injuries to key teammates like Joel Embiid and Paul George, Maxey stepped up as the team’s primary scoring option, even posting a career-high 45-point performance in an overtime win against the Pacers in late October.
He averaged over 30 points per game to start the season but recently suffered a right hamstring injury on November 6 during a game against the Clippers. The initial prognosis suggested he would miss a few weeks, although his recovery is reportedly progressing well, and he’s expected to resume play soon after further evaluations this week.
Maxey’s impressive performances and leadership highlight his growth into a central figure for the 76ers, making him a key player to watch as the season continues.
Joel Embiid’s 2024-25 NBA season has been eventful so far. After missing the first nine games due to managing a knee injury and a three-game suspension for shoving a reporter, he made his season debut on November 12 against the New York Knicks in an NBA Cup matchup. Embiid, playing under a minutes restriction, showed some rust but still made a positive impact. He contributed with defensive presence and ball movement, though his shooting and mobility were not at peak levels as he worked to regain game shape. The 76ers lost that game 111-99, with Embiid logging limited minutes and showing signs of improvement as the game progressed.
ESPN is reporting that Maxey has had to call out Embiid for showing up late to everything.
Amid a 2-11 start that has them in last place in the Eastern Conference, and with their star trio of Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey yet to play a game together, the Philadelphia 76ers held a team meeting following Monday night’s 106-89 loss to the Miami Heat.
The loss was the team’s fourth in a row, sparking veteran guard Kyle Lowry to call for the meeting — a much-needed heart-to-heart and a call to action and urgency, sources told ESPN. Players and coaches held each other accountable and took fault in the start to the season.
Maxey challenged Embiid to be on time to team activities, calling out the 2022-23 league MVP about being late “for everything” and how it impacts the locker room, from other players to the coaching staff, sources briefed on the meeting told ESPN.
It maybe time for the Sixers to part ways with Embiid.
