According to statistics, LeBron James is the best scorer in NBA history. Over the course of three decades, he has demonstrated his insane consistency in getting buckets against any defense or defender. However, some people wonder how he would perform in a basketball game played one-on-one.
Tracy McGrady, a former NBA player, recently raised that argument.
Tracy McGrady’s blunt assessment of LeBron James’s 1v1 ability
He acknowledged that LeBron was the league’s best player for a long time, but he wasn’t sure how the NBA’s all-time top scorer would fare against other NBA players in a one-on-one matchup. He stated:
“I think LeBron has been amazing for 22 freaking years. And he’s been the best basketball player for, you know, God knows how long. But if you put him in one-on-one? I think he’ll get crushed. Yeah, I think he’ll get crushed — amongst guys that are actually in the NBA. And I’m sure LeBron would tell you that. Because his game is naturally built for five-on-five. He’s not a one-on-one basketball player. Kobe is a one-on-one basketball player. Kyrie is a one-on-one basketball player. James Harden — these guys are one-on-one basketball players. And LeBron can’t do anything with that.”
It’s one perspective, and McGrady tends to agree with it. It’s still unclear without actual one-on-one games, but players like Kyrie Irving and James Harden are wired for that approach in a way that LeBron isn’t usually asked to be.
There are times when a single player tries to produce on his own without any picks or actions—just talent against talent—known as isolation possessions or post-ups. And LeBron is still there in those situations.
