Over 35 years after Tracy Chapman first drove ‘Fast Car’ to the top of charts around the world, a stunning performance at the 2024 GRAMMYs may see her revving the classic tune up for a repeat.

Chapman first made ‘Car’ a hit in 1988 when the song not only raced to #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 but also got nominated for multiple awards at the 1989 GRAMMYs including Record and Song of the Year – helping her take home the Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance honor).

Fast forward to 2024, the elusive chanteuse was the talk of the event yet again after she made a rare appearance by joining Country superstar Luke Combs for a live showing of the David Kershenbaum-produced tune – garnering a standing ovation for the performance.

Fans of the latter know his version of ‘Car’ rode to #1 on the Country charts last year and nabbed him a Best Country Solo Performance nomination at Sunday night’s GRAMMYs (February 4).

And while Combs lost the category to Chris Stapleton‘s ‘White Horse,’ Chapman latter claimed her own victory when her original version of the tune zoomed to #1 on real-time sales charts in the United States.
