While the net has been swarmed with fan-edited memes featuring the official poster of the forthcoming, live-action version of ‘Wicked‘ (seen above), some have certainly been more complimentary than others.
Taking to social media on Wednesday (October 16), Erivo called out one particular edit as it re-designed the above to look more like the iconic Broadway poster.
“This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen,” Cynthia said in response. “The original poster is an ILLUSTRATION. I am a real life human being, who chose to look right down the barrel of the camera to you, the viewer …because, without words we communicate with our eyes.”
Later in her blast of the edit, Erivo likened the recreation to “AI” and erasure.
“Our poster is an homage not an imitation, to edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me,” she continued. “And that is just deeply hurtful.”
Erivo plays the film’s main character “Elphaba” (the Wicked Witch of the West) while fellow GRAMMY winner Ariana Grande portrays “Glinda the Good Witch.”
