He mentioned how Shanahan might be paired with a quarterback with generational skill like Caleb Williams in Chicago, which might revitalize the coach’s career and provide the Bears with a much-needed offensive maestro.

In the NFL, head coach trades are uncommon, but they have happened before. In 2002, the Oakland Raiders traded Jon Gruden to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, receiving eight million dollars in exchange for two first- and two second-round picks.

Similarly, the Denver Broncos paid a first and second-round pick to the New Orleans Saints in 2023 to get Sean Payton. A trade involving Shanahan might provide the 49ers with a sizable amount of draft money.

Although he has been criticized for failing to win a Super Bowl, Shanahan has a proven track record of producing quarterbacks and running potent offenses. His reputation as a quarterback expert stems from his work with players such as Brock Purdy, Jimmy Garoppolo, Matt Ryan, and Kirk Cousins.

Shanahan’s suggested destination, according to Florio, is the Chicago Bears, who recently fired head coach Matt Eberflus. Given the potential to select Caleb Williams and an offensive lineup that includes Rome Odunze and DJ Moore, the Bears may provide Shanahan with the resources he needs to create a potent attack.

Giving up Shanahan might mean the end of an era for San Francisco, but it would also mean having the resources to start over. In an indication of their long-term faith in their abilities, the 49ers front office extended both Shanahan and general manager John Lynch through 2027. However, a significant reorganization may be imminent if the team’s postseason prospects wane.
