Riley Leonard was severely injured and had a serious fright. After finishing the evening with the largest victory of his collegiate career, he now has the opportunity to compete for a national title.
Leonard helped Notre Dame defeat Penn State 27–24 in the Orange Bowl on Thursday night by throwing for 223 yards and rushing for another 33, earning the team a trip to the College Football Playoff championship game.
Mitch Jeter’s 41-yard field goal with 8 seconds remaining gave the Irish the victory, and Freeman’s 54-yard pass to Jaden Greathouse with 4:38 remaining tied the score once more, this time at 24-24.

Freeman’s halftime remark was crucial, according to Leonard. According to Leonard: “He said, ‘History is written by conquerors, and we’re holding the pen.’ … We believed that we could do it and we went out there and did it,”
After a play in which he was struck by Dvon J-Thomas and Zane Durant of Penn State, Leonard entered the medical tent on the Notre Dame sideline with almost two minutes remaining in the half. Leonard seems to have struck the rear of his helmet against the grass.
Steve Angeli replaced Leonard, and on the last play of the half, Notre Dame made a 41-yard field goal to trim Penn State’s advantage to 10-3.
