Octavio Dotel, a Former MLB Player, Survives a Fatal Nightclub Roof Fall

Early on Tuesday, the roof of a famous nightclub collapsed in the Dominican Republic, injuring 160 people, including former major league pitcher Octavio Dotel.

Nelsy Cruz, the sister of seven-time MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz and the governor of the northwest province of Montecristi, was among the at least forty-four individuals slain.

Around one in the morning, during a merengue concert that attracted politicians, sports, and others, the structure collapsed. The reason behind the roof’s fall was not immediately apparent.

About six hours later, Dotel, who recorded 36 saves for the Athletics and Houston Astros in 2004, was retrieved from the debris. The 51-year-old Dotel began playing in the major leagues with the Mets in 1999. He contributed to the St. Louis Cardinals’ World Series victory in 2011. Dotel has a 3.78 ERA and 109 saves in his 15 years in the major leagues.

Workers are still looking through the debris of the Santo Domingo nightclub Jet Set for possible survivors. According to Juan Manual Méndez, the Center of Emergency Operations’ director: “We presume that many of them are still alive, and that is why the authorities here will not give up until not a single person remains under the rubble,”
