Kevin Durant, a player for the Phoenix Suns, has never held back while discussing the NBA’s new 2025 All-Star Game model. According to him, the league’s most recent effort to redesign the midseason showcase is simply “terrible.”
Using a mini-tournament style with four teams and three games instead of traditional matches, the NBA formally announced its daring new plan for the All-Star Game on Tuesday. In order to enhance the spectacle, the squads were managed by Shaquille O’Neal, Candace Parker, Kenny Smith, and Charles Barkley. The league is trying to sell the adjustments as “innovative” and “competitive,” but Durant isn’t convinced…
Kevin Durant’s unfiltered opinion on NBA All-Star Format
At a Suns practice, the 14-time All-Star expressed his unvarnished thoughts. Durant informed reporters: “I hate it,” “Absolutely hate it. Terrible. All the formats-terrible, in my opinion. We should just go back to East-West. Just play a game.”

As the NBA struggles with waning enthusiasm around its main event, Durant’s displeasure is a common emotion among players and fans. Commissioner Adam Silver promised a shake-up in an attempt to rekindle competition after the 2024 All-Star Game’s ratings fell to an all-time low. Last month, Silver admitted that the lack of intensity in recent years has frustrated players and fans alike.
However, Durant contends that tradition and simplicity might be the answer. Durant stated: “I think we’ve been trying to bring that flare somehow back with the All-Star Weekend,” “But I think we just keep a tradition. We’ll see how this one works. I might be wrong.”
With the league relying on top managers like Shaq and Barkley to create curiosity, the tournament-style concept adds a new twist.
