Michael Vick, a former quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons, is the most recent high-profile individual to enter the college head coaching profession.
According to The Virginia-Pilot, Vick has been hired to take over Norfolk State’s FCS program. On Monday, it was announced that Vick was involved in the search. According to ESPN, he also participated in the search at Sacramento State, another FCS program.
Norfolk State’s 2024 season ended with a 4–8 record and a 2–3 MEAC conference record. After four seasons with a 15–30 record with the Spartans, coach Dawson Odums was let go.
Michael Vick’s growth as a coach
Vick, who has never had a formal coaching position at any level, is given the program by the Spartans. He was an intern for the Kansas City Chiefs early in Andy Reid’s career, but since his NFL retirement, he has mostly worked in media at Fox Sports.
Vick, who grew up in Newport News, just outside of Norfolk, before rising to national prominence at Virginia Tech, is a football legend in his home state of Virginia, even if coaching is new to him. He guided the Hokies to a spot in the 2000 BCS national championship game while only a redshirt freshman. In that season’s Heisman voting, he came in third.
Vick would later be selected first overall in the 2001 NFL Draft. He played for the Falcons and Eagles and was a four-time Pro Bowler.
