‘When I See U’ hitmaker Fantasia may have been surprised to see her name listed among the actresses vying for a Golden Globe Award at the show’s 2024 ceremony, but industry critics have deemed her a favorite for the coveted trophy since first taking a peek at her stunning performance as “Celie” in the 2023 musical film ‘The Color Purple.’
And while being nominated is an honor in itself, should she capture the golden statuette she will be penciled in history books for quite the unique achievement.
Details inside.
The 81st Golden Globe Awards will see Fannie compete against Jennifer Lawrence, Margot Robbie, Emma Stone, Natalie Portamn, and Alma Poysti for Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (Actress).
A triumph in the category would mark only the second time a Black performer has captured the trophy since it was first handed out in 1951. Uniquely, if Fantasia wins she’ll become the first Black singer to own this category.
Angela Bassett made history in 1994 when she became the first Black woman to win the Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy Golden Globe for her portrayal of Queen of Rock Tina Turner in the critically acclaimed 1993 film ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It?’
Industry critics have historically looked to the Globes as precursors for who will nab the similarly billed OSCAR.
And while the Academy Award nominations will not be announced until January 23, a victory in this Golden Globe category could lend favorably for Fannie’s chances when the former airs on March 12.
Tune into the Jo Koy-hosted Golden Globes tonight (January 7) at 8p EST only on CBS to see how Fantasia fares.
