The Cleveland Browns confirmed that quarterback Deshaun Watson had surgery on Thursday after rupturing his right Achilles tendon once more.
Watson’s “recovery time and return to play status is uncertain, and he will likely miss significant time during the 2025 season,” the Browns said in a statement. Watson’s recuperation is anticipated to take at least seven months, according to sources who spoke to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Watson complained of pain during his season-ending exit interview earlier this week after injuring his ankle in Miami. An MRI later showed a “re-rupture to his Achilles tendon,” according to the team. Prior to the procedure, Watson had a consultation with Dr. Robert Anderson on Thursday.
Will Deshaun Watson impact the Browns by trading a replacement?
On October 20, Watson, 29, suffered his first Achilles tear, ending his season for the second consecutive year due to injury. After having surgery on his throwing shoulder, he also missed the last eight games of the 2023 campaign.
Watson’s injury won’t have a big effect on the Browns‘ offseason intentions at quarterback, general manager Andrew Berry stated earlier this week during his end-of-season news conference. A 2023 fifth-round pick who failed in his two starts this season, Dorian Thompson-Robinson is the only other quarterback under contract for the 2025 campaign.
Jameis Winston, an unrestricted free agent, started seven games following Watson’s injury before being benched. Bailey Zappe, a restricted free agent, began the season finale. One of the top quarterback prospects might be selected by the Browns with the No. 2 choice in the 2025 NFL draft.
On Monday, Berry stated: “I think the reality of it is that room, it will look different next year,”
Before the 2022 season, Watson signed a five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million contract, of which he still has two years left. Watson has cap hits of $72.9 million in 2025 and 2026, which is now the second-highest in the NFL, and the Browns owe him $46 million in each of the next two seasons. Since the Browns acquired Watson in March 2022 in exchange for three first-round selections, he has only appeared in 19 games. Prior to the injury that ended his season, he had the NFL’s lowest Total QBR.
