Charles Barkley just spilled the beans about his upcoming role at ESPN! The basketball legend is making a move to the broadcasting giant, and we couldn’t be more pumped.
Charles always brings his A-game, whether he’s on the court or behind the mic, so you know he’s going to bring some serious energy and insight to the table.
During a candid Monday appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Barkley pulled back the curtain on what’s next for him, Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kenny Smith. While the award-winning Inside the NBA show will make the move to ESPN, Barkley revealed that he and his longtime colleagues will continue working for TNT as well. What they’ll be doing there, however, remains very much in question — and Barkley is already unimpressed.
“We taped a pilot about a month ago and it was the stupidest sh– ever,” Barkley said bluntly. “We’re probably going to work on ESPN one-third or half the time, but [TNT’s] trying to do something stupid.”
“For one, we won’t have basketball highlights,” he pointed out. “And two, we’ll be airing opposite NBA games. Who’s going to turn off an actual game on ESPN, Amazon, or NBC to watch four guys sitting around talking about nothing?”
The NBA legend didn’t mince words in criticizing the pilot, saying it had no real direction or purpose. “We were just doing stupid stuff, and it was stupid stuff. I wouldn’t want to go out like that,” Barkley said. “I’ll give TNT credit, though — they admitted it was an awful pilot.”
The broadcasting icon also reiterated that he doesn’t want to become overextended with ESPN. Unlike some analysts who juggle appearances across multiple platforms and time slots, Barkley says he’s made it clear that he’s not interested in spreading himself thin — especially if he’s still tied to TNT in some capacity.
“I just want to do something meaningful and fun,” Barkley told Patrick. “I don’t want to do something just for the sake of doing it. I love basketball. I love talking about it. But if there’s no basketball to talk about, what’s the point?”
If Charles’ past work is any indication, we’re in for a real treat. So stay with BSO for more updates on when and where you can catch Charles Barkley dishing out his sports expertise on ESPN. It’s going to be epic!
