In an interview with Tim Blanks, Erivo talks about ‘Wicked’ being a wild and crazy ride, Elphaba still being with her, and how the film impacts others.

She said:

“I keep having with people who I’ve never met before, people who come up to me in the middle of the street and say, “Hey, I saw the film, I don’t feel alone any more.” I recognised that. I got a text from a friend of mine. He said, “My ninety something grandmother went to see the film and she sobbed, ‘It’s the first time I’ve seen myself on screen”.

The 38-year-old also touches on how Elphaba’s green skin allowed her to express the feelings of not only racism but the ‘others’ as well:

“The green skin is like the umbrella under which the ‘other’ lives. So yes, it’s a conversation about racism, but it’s also a conversation about anyone who’s been othered. It’s a conversation about queerness. The green sets Elphaba apart from everybody else. She is the ultimate other. And I think there’s this added responsibility because I’m a Black woman underneath that green, so we can also really have the conversation about what it’s like to be a Black woman when nobody wants you there”.

The ‘Wicked’ star plans on releasing a new album soon, and this will be her first release since her 2021 project ‘Ch.1 Vs. 1’. She too co-wrote an original song for the ‘Wicked’ sequel ‘Wicked: For Good’.

Speaking on what listeners can expect from her project, she recently told CBS News’ Seth Doane:

“Some of it’s autobiographical, some of it is train of thought. I love the music that we’ve made; most of it is very much just me and my voice. We’ve built a lot of music using the sounds that I can make. The album is expected to drop this year.”

We can’t wait for Cynthia’s new album. What about you?
