Dabo Swinney, the head coach of the Clemson Tigers, recently threw some shots at Deion Sanders. Swinney said that if Sanders didn’t have a degree, he wouldn’t have qualified to be a coach while discussing NIL (name, likeness, image) deals in an interview on “Unafraid Show with George Wrighster.”
But here’s the thing – Swinney is not wrong. In the world of coaching, having a degree is usually a requirement. It shows that you have the knowledge and the commitment to be able to lead and educate others. And it’s not just in coaching, but in many other professions as well.
Now, I’m not saying that Sanders isn’t knowledgeable or passionate about the game of football. He has had an amazing career as a player and now as a coach. But in the eyes of the industry, having a degree is important. It’s a way to validate your skills and show that you have put in the time and effort to learn and grow in your field.
This is what Dabo had to say about the Colorado Buffaloes head coach, Deion Sanders;
“I love Deion Sanders, he’s one of my heroes growing up. You know, what a shame if he couldn’t go do that job. He couldn’t be the head coach if he didn’t have his degree. And he’s not coaching for money, he’s coaching because he loves to teach.
And man, what a shame if he didn’t have that degree. Wouldn’t matter how many Hall of Fames he was in. He wouldn’t be qualified to go do that.”
But hey, don’t let this discourage you. If coaching is your passion and you don’t have a degree, there are still ways to make it happen. You can gain experience through coaching at lower levels or through other avenues, and then work your way up. And who knows, maybe one day you’ll prove Swinney and the naysayers wrong. Go for it!
