Charlamagne: “Cardi B Did for Female Rap What Jay-Z & Drake Did”

Charlamagne Tha God is all sorts of renowned for saying what is on his mind. And his latest set of remarks have tongues wagging.

During a candid segment on the latest edition of The Breakfast Club, the revered host said that he believes Cardi B is to female Hip-Hop what Jay-Z and Drake are to the genre for males.

Anchoring his stance in his Cardi’s embrace of upcoming talent, Charlamagne shared:

“Cardi  B did for female Rap what Jay-Z and Drake did. The OG who sold all the records, made all the money and you have no problem putting your arms around the next person”

Folk will focus on the heavyweight names he put her alongside, but the specificities of what he’s praising Cardi for are facts from our vantage point and really ought to be studied and adapted by others.

That whole “embrace not beef” mentality Cardi has is what has extended her reign in the absence of that elusive second album.

From GloRilla to Latto to Scar Lip to countless others, Cardi has made it routine to lend her reach and platform to those coming after her.

Avoiding the mistakes of others, who would assert dominance over newcomers, she has flipped the narrative. And, as a result, reaps the benefits both culturally and commercially. Granted there will always be an air of competition in Hip-Hop (and music more broadly), there also is undeniable strength in numbers. A memo Cardi clearly gets.
