Angel Reese has cautioned the WNBA that players may strike if their salaries do not see an increase. The WNBA has recently chosen to opt out of its existing Collective Bargaining Agreement, which is set to expire this coming October instead of in 2027.
Player compensation is one of several issues causing friction between the league and its athletes. A conflict appears imminent, and Reese has indicated that she and her teammates might choose to refrain from playing if their requests are not addressed.
Angel Reese speaks out on player wages
The Chicago Sky player expressed her thoughts on potential strike action during an episode of her Unapologetically Angel podcast:
“I need to be in the (players’ union) meetings because I’m hearing that if (the league) don’t give us what we want, we’re sitting out.”
“That’s a possibility, for real.”
“I love how y’all have selective hearing.
“I said, ‘I’m hearing if they don’t give us what we want, we sitting out.’ And that’s the truth.
“I never said anything about the NBA. We are prepared to stay at the negotiating table for as long as it takes.”
“Here’s the link to my podcast so you can hear the conversation too.
“I will continue to use my voice to speak for what WE want & deserve as a league. Thank ya.”
Reese’s remarks about the possibility of a strike quickly gained traction and sparked varied reactions among basketball enthusiasts.
The social media buzz prompted a notable reply from the power forward, who remarked: “I appreciate how some of you have selective hearing.”
The WNBA’s popularity has surged over the past year, largely credited to Reese and the entrance of Caitlin Clark.
