Trevor Noah Becomes the First Black Man To Win Outstanding Talk Series in the EMMYs’ 75-Year History

The 2023 EMMYs, which was rescheduled to air on Monday (January 15, 2024), had a number of historic wins for people of color – namely Niecy Nash-Betts, Ayo Edebiri, and Quinta Brunson (as we reported here).

Before the show’s end, comic-talk show host Trevor Noah joined that exclusive list of history-making winners.

Battling ‘The Problem with Jon Stewart,’ ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers,’ ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!,’ and ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,’ Noah – despite retiring from the show in 2022 (as we reported here) – captured the Outstanding Talk Series EMMY for his role as host of Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show.’

The victory not only marks the second win of his career (having previously secured the Outstanding Short Form Variety Series statuette in 2017), but also the first time a person of color has collected this particular trophy since its arrival in 2015.

Before it was morphed to Outstanding Talk Series, the category was combined with Outstanding Variety Sketch Series and known as Outstanding Variety Series. Flip Wilson and Keenen Ivory Wayans were the only two Black men to capture that award between 1971 until its retirement in 2015.
