While many Americans took to social media to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the holiday that bears his name (January 20), controversial rapper Sexyy Red found herself being slammed by his daughter – a Civil Rights icon in her own right – for engaging in social media activity branded the complete opposite of honoring.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) on Tuesday (January 21), Dr. Bernice King – the youngest daughter of MLK – took aim at Red (born Janae Wherry) for posting an A.I.-generated photo of herself in the club with the Civil Rights leader.

“These images are intentionally dishonoring, deplorable, and disrespectful,” she tweeted after sharing the picture.“My father is not here to respond himself because he was assassinated for working for your civil and human rights and to end war and poverty. Please delete.”

As King’s tweet picked up steam by media outlets, she clarified that she was not directly attacking Wherry’s character as much as she was trying to draw attention to the use of this type of imagery overall.

By Tuesday night, Bernice’s reaction landed on the desk of Red who promptly removed the photo that caused the commotion and even issued an apology.

“…never meant to disrespect your family; my apologies,” she wrote on the platform. “Just reposted something I saw that I thought was innocent.”
