Ohio State Buckeyes Smashes Oregon in the CFP Quarters

As he left the field Wednesday, Jeremiah Smith, a rose stem firmly in his lips, gazed confidently into the scarlet-coated portion of the Rose Bowl stands.

Around Smith, teammates, cheerleaders, and fans were taking in the sights and sounds of the Buckeyes’ 41-21 thrashing of Oregon in the Prudential-sponsored Rose Bowl Game while the Ohio State band played the school fight song. They were two victories away from a national championship after their second consecutive loping victory in the College Football Playoffs.

Buckeyes players react to the win

Smith managed to hold the rose stem in his mouth as he spoke: “We’ve got a chip on our shoulder, and that chip ain’t going away,”  “That’s who we are.” “Can’t give them any life, no reason to believe they can win,”. “We knew there were no tomorrows for us when we came into this playoff. We got a second chance [after the loss to Michigan], and you see what we’re doing with it.”

That’s fitting, too, because the Buckeyes have done just about anything they’ve wanted in this playoff.

Ohio State senior defensive tackle Tyleik Williams said: “As much pain as that caused a lot of people, I don’t know if we’d be here without that,” . “I know it sounds simple, but it gets back to executing the way we can, the way our talent says we should. When we do that, I’m not sure anybody can beat us, and you’ve seen that these last two games.”

In their first meeting this season in Eugene, Ohio State (12-2) left no room for uncertainty, jumping out to a 34-0 lead in the second quarter against an undefeated Oregon team that narrowly defeated Ohio State 32-31 on October 12.

How overwhelming was this defeat in the quarterfinals? Smith had five catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns at 10:28 in the second quarter, and Ohio State was ahead 24-0. The team total for Oregon was 60 yards.
