In a filing made with the Los Angeles Superior this week, the multifaceted entertainer claims that an audit of the show found that the network “inequitably structured the Series’ finances to artificially depress its profitability” so it can “retain tens of millions that would otherwise be contractually due and owed.”
The extensive submission unpacks layered allegations that it says affected Mo’Nique and others involved in the show.
Serving as a spinoff series of smash hit ‘90s sitcom ‘Moesha,’ ‘The Parkers’ proved a force on its own accord – running for six seasons, airing on TV domestically and internationally to this day, and streaming on Netflix.
Clocking in at 110 episodes, the show – which was produced by CBS Studios’ Big Ticket Production and licensed to Paramount, met the 100-episode requirement for syndication and Mo’Nique says she “reasonably expected to enjoy significant contingent compensation from the series’ revenue.”
However, in a stacked filing, her reps allege supposed practice that, upon investigation, amounts to “significant financial malfeasance undertaken by Defendants.” Much of the suit centers on allegations of several moves regarding licensing deals designed to deny talent and creatives involved in the show their alleged due.
Mo’Nique, who recently settled a lengthy legal feud with Netflix, is alleging breach of contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, and intentional interference with contract. And she is seeking monetary damages, including punitive damages, and an accounting under court supervision of ‘The Parkers” profits.
A response is anticipated from Paramount and CBS in due course.
