Early on Tuesday morning, the ceiling of the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo collapsed while Blanco, 43, and former Major League Baseball player Esteban Germán were inside.

The wreckage claimed the lives of Blanco, a former first baseman for the Washington Nationals, Nelsy Cruz, the sister of MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz, and MLB great Octavio Dotel.
According to Germán, who amazingly survived the club, Blanco made a selfless gesture in his last moments. He informed MLB insider Héctor Gómez that the roof at Jet Set began to collapse as he was leaving the restroom.
Germán claimed that when Blanco saw the ceiling was going to collapse on him, he shoved him aside. Shortly before the disaster, Germán shared videos of Pérez performing on Instagram. It was eventually verified that Pérez was killed in the collapse.
Germán posted a devastating update on his Instagram Story when the roof collapsed. The former second baseman with the Oakland A’s wrote: “I’m fine, thanks to God,”
First responders are still working around the clock to rescue victims at the area, and he added that he was attempting to assist. Later, the MLB issued a statement confirming Blanco’s passing and paying tribute to the baseball great.
