Magic Johnson Goes Crazy About Commanders Winning Their 1st Playoff Game Since 2005

Magic Johnson and his spouse Cookie are part of the ownership group that paid a record $6.05 billion for the Washington Commanders in July 2023. Magic made it apparent right away that this endeavor was more than just a business transaction when he invested $240 million for a four percent interest.

After a few months, the Commanders’ historic playoff triumph over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January 2024 demonstrated the effectiveness of Magic’s leadership and vision.

The Commanders won their first playoff game since 2005 with a thrilling 23–20 victory, ending a 6,945-day playoff drought for the first time in almost 20 years.

Quick adjustments after the new ownership took over allowed the Commanders to succeed. The franchise was able to turn things around with new management in the front office and on the field.

But the acquisition of a franchise quarterback—a position that has long been a weakness for the team—was the most important element in their comeback to the playoffs.

Magic Johnson takes to Instagram to share his joy

The actual game was dramatic. Zane Gonzalez’s incredible 37-yard field goal was made possible by Jayden Daniels’ last-ditch effort to gain a vital first down. The Commanders’ sideline screamed in celebration when the ball bounced against the upright and fell through as the allotted time ran out.

There to enjoy the emotional moment and take in the thrill were Magic and Cookie Johnson.  “Our Commanders have won tonight! “Our team’s first playoff victory since 2005 was achieved with another last-second field goal,” he wrote.

For Magic and the Commanders, the victory was only the start. After their thrilling win, they now have to contend with the top-seeded Detroit Lions in the divisional round.

Clearly excited about the impending contest, Magic wrote: “We are so excited to head back home to Michigan for our next matchup against the Lions!”
