Luka Doncic was raised on the basketball court, with his father, Sasa Doncic, being a highly regarded player in the European basketball community. His father’s professional career provided Luka with valuable exposure from a young age, leading him to join Real Madrid and compete for one of Europe’s most prominent teams.
He signed a five-year deal with Madrid and relocated to Spain to play for their youth squad. Prior to this, Luka had always lived and played in Slovenia, where he exclusively spoke Slovenian, along with a bit of English.
As a result, his transition from Slovenia to Spain presented significant challenges. At just 13 years old, Luka’s knowledge of Spanish consisted of only a few basic greetings.
Luka Doncic speaks about his Spanish learning
This initial phase of his experience with Real Madrid became a significant learning opportunity in many respects.
Doncic discussed the move on Mind the Game: “It was a difficult decision, honestly,”. “First, I didn’t know the language yet. I knew a little bit, just like, ‘Hello, how are you?’ But then nobody spoke my language.”
“It was a lot, you know, the first two, three months, I almost didn’t spoke to anybody. But that’s how I learned Spanish so quickly. And after that, it was just an amazing journey.”
The struggle of not understanding the language primarily used for communication drove Luka to his limits. He admitted that his difficulty in communicating with others during those first few months accelerated his Spanish learning process.
